Starting in 2002, Bampton Community Archive, has made its home in The Old Grammar School which also houses the Library. The aim of the BCA is to record the social history of this extraordinary village. Since its inception it has created 3 exhibitions each year on subjects as varied as ‘Bampton Architecture’, &lsquo:Bampton and World War 1’, three volumes of ‘Dug up in Bampton’ which show a huge range of archaeological finds, Bampton and Morris Dancing, Bampton Pubs and Bampton Trades. Now we produce a fine catalogue for each exhibition and we have an amazing online archive, housing over 8,000 items, from newspaper cuttings, photographs, old letters and election material and much else. We also have around 120 sound recordings by various Bamptonians of all ages, and we have about 75 films relating to Bampton life. If you look at our website atom.bamptonarchive.org, you can see samples of our recordings and films. If you visit the Vesey Room of Bampton Library you can see all our catalogues, giving you a taste of the richness of Bampton life both now and in the past.
The Vesey Room also houses our shop, not only selling our catalogues, but also all sorts of Downton Abbey memorabilia because, as you may know, Bampton was the setting for Downton village in the popular and world famous television series.
We have about 60 volunteers helping to make Bampton Community Archive what it is. The Archive can give you a sense of the history and traditions of the village you have chosen to live in.
But you can also help the Archive. It's a good way to get to know the village.
You could help by ‘sitting’ for a 2 hour session in the Vesey Room shop. Here you will not only meet Bamptonians but visitors from all over the world. In the winter months when it's quiet, you can sit and read or knit; in the summer months, things are livelier when the world visits Bampton. If you are interested in preparing an exhibition linked to life in Bampton, we would be here to help you. If you are interested in filming or sound recording, we have the equipment and would help. If you would like to help with archiving all the material that comes our way, we would love to see you. If you are interested in publicising our activities, there is a place for you.
All our helpers are volunteers and any profits we make in the ‘shop’ go to restoring the historic Grammar School and when that is done – all money will go to various groups in the village.

Founded in 1993 by the Earl of Donoughmore "to improve the quality of life of the people of Bampton", the Society has approximately 400 members paying a subscription per household of £5 every other year.
The Society bought for the benefit of the village and for use as a public open space Sandfords Field, where the Donkey Derby is held every August Bank Holiday. Recently the Society has been overwhelmingly involved in opposing or at least seeking to improve large scale house building applications with a particular reference to flooding on which the Society has acquired considerable expertise.
